Institute presentation

The Leiden University Medical Center was the first European Center to perform allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. The department of Hematology of the LUMC has a long interest in progress and improvement of allogeneic stem cell transplantation as a method to cure patients with hematological diseases.

Although stem cell transplantations and cellular immunotherapy is the only curative treatment for many patients with hematological malignancies, this complex therapeutic procedure can be accompanied by a variety of complication including severe infections and graft versus host disease (GvHD). The main goal of the research performed by the department of Hematology is to provide a better outcome by improving the anti tumor efficacy of cellular immunotherapy, the prevention of infections complications and the diminishment of the risk of GvHD for patients.

Various strategies are being explored by first removing the T-cells from the donor graft followed by infusion of specifically selected T cell populations capable of attacking pathogens and malignant cells. The department has pioneered in identifying potential targets for cellular immunotherapy, and the development therapeutic T-cell reagents. This include the production of various purified specific

T-cells for the treatment of viral reactivations after transplantation, the genetic re-engineering of those T-cells with T-cell receptors capable of recognizing tumor cells, and the development of procedures to purity leukemia reactive T-cells for the treatment of residual disease post-transplant. The goal of T-control is to further improve these methods and make them more applicable to large numbers of patients, thereby improving the outcome of cellular therapy in the context of allogeneic stem cell transplantation.
