Institute presentation

Anthony Nolan was set-up in London in the early 1970's by Mrs Shirley Nolan in memory of her son, Anthony. The Institute was the first unrelated bone marrow donor registry in the world to collect tissue-typing data on volunteer donors.
The Anthony Nolan Research Institute was established in 1993 with the global aim of improving the outcome of Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation through basic and translational research. Our research activities concentrate on the main problems that affect Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation: optimum donor selection, treatment of Graft versus Host Disease and post-transplant viral infections, and the separation of Graft versus Host Disease from the Graft versus Leukaemia effect. Past achievements include the development of a new method that allows us to detect molecular differences that may be responsible for graft rejection, and identification of CMV peptides that could be relevant in the future use of vaccinations.

Anthony Nolan plays an important role within national and international research programs, and is well represented in many organizations and in various publications associated with the fields of stem cell transplantation.
The Scientific and Research Director of Anthony Nolan, Professor Alejandro Madrigal, is currently the President of the European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT). And the Deputy Director of Research of Anthony Nolan, Professor Steven Marsh, is the past President of the European Federation for Immunogenetics (EFI).

Prof Madrigal recently led a very successful EU-funded project, AlloStem, which produced more than 400 publications and more than 20 clinical trials among the 29 groups participating in the project, and whose achievements and development led to the T-Control proposal.
